Extruded Aluminum Profiles Cost Structure
Aluminum Extrusion Process Cost
The cost of custom extruded aluminum profiles is determined by several key components throughout the production and finishing process:
Raw Aluminum Ingot Price – The largest cost factor comes from primary aluminum, which fluctuates based on market prices on exchanges such as the London Metal Exchange (LME) and the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE).
Die Manufacturing Cost – The cost of creating an extrusion die depends mainly on the profile’s maximum diagonal size; larger or more complex dies require more tooling material and precision machining, resulting in higher expenses.
Extrusion Processing Cost – Profiles with larger cross-section diagonals require extrusion presses with higher tonnage, which increases production cost. Thin-wall or tight-tolerance designs may also raise extrusion difficulty.
Heat Treatment Cost – Different tempers come with different costs. T5 is the most common and economical option. T6 temper requires faster quenching and added processing steps, making it more expensive.
Surface Finishing Cost – Anodizing and powder coating are the most widely used finishes. Colored anodizing typically costs more than clear anodizing. Powder coating prices vary depending on the weather-resistance grade of the powder. PVDF coating offers the highest durability and UV resistance but comes at a significantly higher cost. Electrophoresis coating and wood-grain transfer (which requires pre-anodizing) also increase total finishing cost.
Machining Cost – CNC machining, drilling, tapping, cutting, or welding costs depend on the complexity and quantity of the required operations. More precision or heavier machining increases the overall cost.
Price Example — T-SLOT 4040 Aluminum Profile
For a T-slot 4040 aluminum extrusion, the total cost includes the mold fee, aluminum ingot price, extrusion and heat treatment, surface finishing, and machining. Below is an illustrative example based on today’s reference pricing:
Mold Cost: USD 250 (one-time)
Aluminum Ingot Price: USD 3100/ton (today’s reference price)
Extrusion & Heat Treatment
Extrusion + T5 Heat Treatment: USD 430/ton
Extrusion + T6 Heat Treatment: USD 460/ton
Surface Finishing
Clear Anodizing: USD 150/ton
Black Anodizing: USD 300/ton
Electrophoresis Coating: USD 250/ton
Standard Powder Coating: USD 150/ton
Outdoor-Grade Powder Coating (High Durability): USD 450/ton
Wood-Grain Transfer (Indoor Grade): USD 900/ton
Wood-Grain Transfer (Outdoor Grade): USD 1150/ton
Machining
Drilling: USD 0.10 per hole
45° Cutting: USD 0.10 per cut
Example Calculation (Extrusion + T5 + Clear Anodizing)
Aluminum (3100) + Extrusion/T5 (430) + Clear Anodizing (150)
= USD 3680 per ton
(Profile cost only, excluding mold fee and machining.)
If T6 heat treatment, black anodizing, electrophoresis, wood-grain transfer, or outdoor-grade powder coating is selected, the total cost will increase accordingly.
